General note
Tom Innes was the political cartoonist for the Calgary Herald newspaper. Cartoon annotated: 'The CNR is in business to make a profit' - CNR President. Issue: In a speech to the Vancouver Board of Trade, Robert Bandeen, the president of Canadian National, stated that CN should be a profitable corporation and that if the federal government wanted it to undertake unprofitable activities, it should help pay for them. His advocacy of privatisation for the crown corporation raised fears that rail service to sparsely populated parts of the country might be affected. CN had a modest profit in 1976.
