Fonds consists of executive, administrative and operational records of the department created through the performance of the following activities:
- planning and policy development for the health care system in Alberta
- program development
- consulting services to and oversight of health units
- oversight of the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan
- administration of operating and capital grants to hospitals
- performing research on a number of issues related to health care and the health care system
- provision and administration of programs to mentally and physically handicapped adults
- administration of nursing aide training programs
- communications and public relations
- evaluation and development of information management systems for the department
- financial and human resources administration for the department
- participation in inter-departmental and inter-governmental boards, councils, and committees relating to health care
. The fonds includes records of the Deputy Minister's office, the offices of various Assistant Deputy Ministers, and various divisions and branches of the department relating to a wide variety of departmental programs. The fonds also contains records from the Alberta Hospitals in Ponoka and Edmonton, mental health care facilities at Raymond and Clareview, mental health clinics, Rosehaven Home for the Aged, and the Nursing Aide Training School. The fonds is made up of executive, administrative and operational records, including correspondence, case, and subject files; records of program, branch, departmental, interdepartmental, and intergovernmental committees, including minutes, agendas and reports; policy and position papers; forms; financial and budget records; various types of audit files and reports; planning papers; annual reports; statistical reports; farm accounts; annual reports and audited financial statements of hospitals and health units; hospital budgeting records; a variety of types of hospital statistics and reports; vital statistics certificates and name indices; registers of births, marriages, deaths and burials; research project case files and proposals; air ambulance flight logs; ward books from various provincial facilities; petitions; test data; specimen survey responses; database documentation; blueprints and plans; maps; video recordings of public hearings; and various audio-visual material related to health education and promotion.
