Fonds glen-2465 - Women of Unifarm fonds

A women's auxiliary to the United Farmers of Alberta was established in 1914. In 1916 it became an organization in its own right under the name United Farm Women of Alberta (UFWA). Irene Parlby was the first president. The organization provided rural women with an opportunity to meet socially and served as a forum for discussions about issues of importance to women and the rural community. Annual conventions attended by local delegates were held in conjunction with the UFA, and the resulting resolutions were submitted to the government. The organization, along with UFA, was politically active from 1918 to 1939. In 1949 the UFA and the Alberta Farmers' Union merged to form the Farmers' Union of Alberta. The Farm Women's Union of Alberta (FWUA) was established at the same time. In 1970 the FUA and the Alberta Federation of Agriculture joined to form Unifarm and Women of Unifarm. In the 1980s and 1990s the organization was vry active in promoting farm safety.
