History

James Sutherland, 1778-1844, was born in the Orkneys, Scotland. He joined the Hudson's Bay Company in 1797, and from 1798 to 1803, served inland from York Factory, Manitoba. In 1803, he was transferred to Cumberland House, Saskatchewan where he became master and trader, 1808-1813. In 1814 he was given charge of the east and west Winnipeg districts, including all Red River trading posts. When the HBC and North West Company amalgamated in 1821, Sutherland became Chief Factor of the Saskatchewan district. In 1827 he retired to the Red River Settlement, Manitoba.
