Administrative history

The St. Ann Ranch Trading Company Ltd. was incorporated in 1905 by Armand Trochu, Joseph Devilder and Leon C. Eckenfelder, all from France. The company formed the nucleus of the first settlement at Trochu, and encouraged individuals and businesses to settle in the valley. Armand Trochu, 1857-1930, had arrived in Alberta in 1902, and had purchased the St. Ann Ranch site from the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in 1903. He returned to France due to ill health in 1917. Joseph Devilder, ?-1938, the main financier of the enterprise, arrived in Alberta in 1905, but returned to France in 1908 to take over the family banking business. Leon Charles Eckenfelder, 1872-1923, came to Saskatchewan in 1904 and joined Trochu and Devilder the following year as a junior partner in the company. He married Valentine Figerol in 1907 and they had two children, Cecile, 1908-2004, and George. He was the only shareholder to remain in Trochu. The company slowly ceased operations after Trochu's departure, but was not officially liquidated until 1953.
