Administrative history
The Research Development and Policy Committee (RDPC) is a standing committee of the General Faculties Council. The Committee was created on April 27, 1989 (GFC 329.5.1) as the Research Policy Committee (RPC). In January 1999 (GFC 439.10), the name was changed to the Research Development and Policy Committee (RDPC). The purpose of the RDPC is to support the development of research, scholarly and creative initiatives across all units of the University and to provide wide-ranging input on policy affecting such research and research-related activities. In this role, it affirms and strengthens the institutional focus of the University of Calgary in its fundamental role as a research university.
In its role of Development, the RDPC acts in an advisory capacity to, and formulates recommendations for action by, the General Faculties Council, the University Planning Committee and the Vice-President (Research) in order to create and develop new multidisciplinary research programs within and among faculties; enhances the participation of the University in nationally and internationally recognized research; increases exposure of undergraduate students to research; and assists in the evaluation of proposals or reviews of chairs, professorships, institutes, centres or groups. In its role of Policy, the RDPC acts in an advisory capacity to the General Faculties Council and formulates recommendations in matters related to development, review and revision of University research and research-related policies. The RDPC also reviews research policies and other matters such as technology transfer, integrity in scholarship, measures of research performance and outside professional activity.
Membership of the Research Development and Policy Committee consists of ten academic staff members representing the broad campus community named by the GFC Steering Committee for two-year terms. Other members of the Committee include one representative from the Graduate Students' Association; one representative from the Students' Legislative Council; one Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate from the Postdoctoral Association; and one Associate Dean (Research) from the Associate Deans Research Council. Ex officio members of the Committee include the Vice-President (Research); Vice-Provost (Graduate Education) and Dean of Graduate Studies; and the Chair, Associate Deans' Research Council. In addition to the above members, there is also the Executive Secretary, and the following Resource persons: Senior Executive Director, Offices of Research Services and Research Accounting; Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Resources) and University Librarian, or designate; one representative of the University of Calgary Faculty Association, appointed by TUCFA; Deputy Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic); Associate Vice-Presidents (Research); and Senior Executive Assistant, Office of the Vice-President (Research).
