Biographical history

Jack Manson was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. As a youth, he played amateur hockey for the Edmonton Mercuries. He also served with Royal Canadian Air Force in World War II. Jack's Grandfather immigrated to Canada from Scotland, and worked as bricklayer on the Legislature buildings, the Hotel MacDonald, and Government House. In 1983, Jack published a history of the brick trade in Alberta: Bricks in Alberta. Jack and his wife Joan have six children. They now reside in Thorsby, Alberta.

Custodial history

In 1996, Jack M. Manson donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. He acquired the material represented in the fonds from his acquaintances.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of photographs of sporting events in Alberta, predominantly women's basketball, dating from the 1920s to the 1940s; engraving plates for letterpresses printing; programs from the Bijou, Capital, Empress, Metropolitan, Orpheum, Pantages, and Temple Theatre dating from the 1920s to the 1970s; newspaper clippings, photographs, and magazines documenting the history of Alberta dating from 1876 to the 1960's; and a marriage certificate for John and Emma Ervin dating from 1863.
