Biographical history
Henry Wise Wood, 1860-1941, was born near Monroe City, Missouri, USA and was educated at Christian University in Canton, Missouri. He farmed in Missouri until he moved to Carstairs, Alberta in 1905. Wood was elected President of the United Farmers of Alberta in 1916 and had a profound influence on farm politics in Canada. He retired as president of the UFA in 1931. He was also very involved in the Alberta Wheat Pool and became the first president in 1923. Wood was awarded the C.M.G. in 1935. Wood was inducted into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1951 and the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1962. In 1962 the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada designated Wood as a National Historic Person. For further information see Henry Wise Wood of Alberta / W.
