Administrative history
The Faculty of Environmental Design was established in 1972. The Faculty offers four areas of study: architecture, environmental science, industrial design and urban/regional planning. The Faculty's educational mandate is to offer a learning environment that prepares individuals for interdisciplinary collaboration and action, and to ensure that the graduates are competent practitioners in the professional practice of the four programs offered. Fields of activity include research into environmental impact assessments, affordable and sustainable communities, landscape rehabilitation, urban management, human factors in design, sustainable development, community development and natural resource conservation policy and planning. Each fall semester is begun with an off-campus Design Camp which is used as a period of orientation for faculty and students and participation in a community project. The Faculty maintains a close association with the Kananaskis Centre of Environmental Research. The Faculty is governed by a Faculty Council, overseen by an Executive, that is the formal decision-making body of the Faculty. All major decisions on programs and policies are made by the Council. The Admissions Committee reviews and decides upon every file submitted for admission to the Faculty; the Student Awards Committee allocates assistantship money; the Student Advisory Group provides new students with information about the Faculty and program assistance. Deans of the Faculty of Environmental Design: W.T. Perks, 1972-1981; D.D. Detomasi, 1981-1989; R.D. Gillmor, 1989-1990 (Acting Dean); R.J.D. Page, 1990-1998; M.E.M. Tyler, 1998-2003; Brian R. Sinclair, 2003-
