Biographical history
The Edmonton Baseball Club Limited (Ltd.) was incorporated on December 29, 1952 under the Companies Act. The Company was to organize, operate and maintain a professional baseball team, as well as to conduct, hold and promote baseball games and matches, and to acquire and hold franchises in baseball leagues. The Company's president was Brant Matthews, and John Ducey was its general manager. Through the 1953 and 1954 season, baseball in Edmonton was supported by the Club. The Edmonton Baseball Club Ltd. was a private company that held the franchise from the Western International Baseball League. Edmonton's team was the Edmonton Eskimos. The League was comprised of teams from Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, Spokane, Yakima, Wenatchee, Lewiston, Washington and Salem. The League was poorly supported financially and dissolved in January of 1955. A new League was formed on February 19, 1955 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan: the Western Canada Baseball League. This League included teams from Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, North Battleford, Calgary and Edmonton. The Edmonton Baseball Club Ltd. felt that for baseball to continue in Edmonton, it needed financial support and continuing interest from a greater number if individuals within the community, so the Edmonton Baseball Club (1955) Limited was created to provide this support. At the September 15, 1955 meeting of the shareholders, it was resolved that the Edmonton Baseball Club Ltd. would be voluntarily wound up; in a prior agreement, assets of the Company had been sold to the Edmonton Baseball Club (1955) Ltd.
