The Department of Sociology was formed in 1966 in the Faculty of Arts and Science. The following year it expanded to become the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. In 1973 the department split to form the Department of Sociology and the Department of Anthropology. The department moved in 1977 to the newly formed Faculty of Social Sciences where it has remained.
