Administrative history

In 1966 there was mention of a Department of Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts and Science. No mention was made of the department until 1969 when a Linguistics Program was listed. In 1971, the Department of Linguistics was again part of the Faculty of Arts and Science. The department moved in 1977 to the newly created Faculty of Social Sciences where it has remained. The Department of Linguistics offers opportunities for graduate studies, providing students with a strong foundational training. Their research ranges over the core areas of linguistics (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and historical linguistics) as well as interdisciplinary fields such as psycholinguistics and language acquisition. There are usually between ten and fifteen students enrolled in the program at any time. Heads of the Department of Linguistics: H.J. Izzo, 1971-1972; W.C. McCormack, 1972-1973; V.C. Serl, 1973-1975 (Acting); Vacant, 1975-1976; Eung-Do Cook, 1976-1981; R.H. Southerland, 1981-1982; Eung-Do Cook, 1982-1985; R.H. Southerland, 1986-1991; V.P. De Guzman, 1991-1994; Robert W.
