Administrative history

The Faculty of Arts and Science began offering History as a subject in 1960. The Department of History was formed in 1962 in the same Faculty. In 1977, the department moved to the newly formed Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department of History celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1991. The Department offers a BA, BA Honours, a BA Honours in History Cooperative Education, a joint BEd/BA in History, as well as graduate work leading to the MA and PhD degrees. In April 2010, all departments from the Faculty of Social Sciences were combined with those of the Faculties of Fine Arts, Humanities and Communication and Culture into the Faculty of Art. Scope and content

The fonds consists of the subject files of the University of Calgary's Department of history. The files are mostly administrative pertaining to the Canadian, Military and United States history programs and chairs, graduate program review, minutes and agendas of the Graduate Studies Committee, PhD proposal and programs, budget cutbacks, correspondence with the Unites States Air Force and United States Army College, correspondence, minutes and agenda of the Graduate Studies Committee, the Weiser Committee's report on graduate student funding, a survey conducted by female graduate students in history presented at the Canadian Historical Association (Victoria, 1990) and minutes of Department meetings. Many files also include proposals, news clippings, newsletters, surveys and questionnaires. The fonds also consists of files accumulated by Donovan Williams in his tenure as professor and Head of the department. Files include discussions on programs and curriculum, minutes of departmental meetings, correspondence of the Policy and Planning Committee, and correspondence and minutes of the Status of Women Committee of which Williams was a member.
