History
Johnny Callihoo, 1882-1957, was born on the Michel reserve (50 km north of Edmonton, Alberta) of Iroquois-Cree extraction. He worked as a freighter in northern Alberta, and later farmed. He was very active in lobbying for First Nations rights, and in 1937 became the president of the League of Alberta Indians. In 1939 the group was reorganized under his leadership as the Indian Association of Alberta, and became one of the most influential First Nations groups in Canada. In 1947 he led an IAA delegation to Ottawa to appear before the Joint Committee of the Senate and Commons on Indian Affairs. He retired later the same year.
