Biographical history

The Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) Canada's national mountaineering organization, based in Canmore, Alberta, formed in 1906. The Club offers local club sections across Canada, membership in the Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme (UIAA.), year-round mountain adventures, and an extensive system of alpine and backcountry huts throughout the Canadian Rockies. The Club operates with the help of volunteer, member, corporate and government support. An executive and board of directors govern the Club. According to the Club's constitution, the Club's objectives include: the encouragement and practice of mountaineering and mountain crafts and the promotion of these skills through participation in the activities of the Club; the education of Canadians in appreciation of their mountain heritage; the exploration of alpine and glacial regions and the promotion of scientific study thereof, primarily in Canada, but also in other countries possessing mountain ranges; the preservation of the natural beauties of the mountain places and of the fauna and flora in their habitat' the promotion of art and literature as applied to mountain regions; the dissemination for scientific and educational purposes of knowledge concerning mountains and mountaineering through meetings, publications and library; the exchange of information of educational or scientific value, information about equipment and techniques and any other matters of interest, with other mountaineering clubs and organizations having the same or similar objects, throughout the world. In pursuit of their objectives, the Club gathers information on mountaineering for dissemination to members of the club in the production of the Canadian Alpine Journal and the Club's gazette; studies glaciers and glacial action in Canada; establishes and maintains climbing huts and shelters in mountains; develops professional and amateur guides to assist the Club in providing training, climbing, and ski mountaineering programs; maintaining summer camps and ski mountaineering camps in the alpine regions of Canada.

Custodial history

In 1968, the Provincial Archives of Alberta received the material (PR1968.0323) from P.H. Howard, the Deputy Provincial Secretary of the Provincial Archives of Alberta. The Deputy Provincial Secretary received the material from a member of the Alpine Club. In 1995, Doris and Eric Hopkins donated the material (PR1995.009) to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. Doris and Eric Hopkins held membership with the club.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of materials documenting the Alpine Club of Canada and includes a letter pertaining to the Canadian Alpine Club of Canada's Yukon Alpine Centennial Expedition in 1967; copies of the Canadian Alpine Journal dating from 1907 -- 1993 (with gaps); copies of the Club's Gazette from 1946 -- 1985 (with gaps); and Accidents in North American Pioneering 1967 -- 1992 (with gaps); and a membership list of the Club dating from 1985.
